Real rubber is one of the best materials we know for a watch band. It is flexible, comfortable, and completely waterproof. It will also stretch a little, so it does not “pinch” when you are active and the muscles in your wrist expand. We can also make rubber straps in a variety of great colors. The only drawback is that natural rubber has a quite... "pungent" aroma. If you have ever spent time in a tire shop, you will know what we mean!
Momentum’s rubber straps are made for us by a family-owned company in Italy that has been making high quality rubber straps for generations. They discovered that adding a small amount of vanilla essence to the rubber compound “cancels out” the pungent natural rubber smell. While we do get an occasional customer who does not like the vanilla smell, the overwhelming majority of our customers love it, and often ask us if we “still have those great rubber straps that smell like vanilla”. The scent is quite light and will fade gradually over time... but if it this happens, it may be time to "refresh" your watch with a new band!
Many watch companies use “rubber” straps that are actually made of plastic, or silicone rubber. The light vanilla scent is a good way of recognizing that you are getting a real Momentum rubber strap. One of our customers may have said it best when he commented on his rubber strap recently:
